Although most people understand the threat of identity theft, few people know how to protect from identity theft. Simply hiring a credit monitoring agency is not enough – you have to be pro-active and vigilant and always alert for people who could be out to steal your identity.
That does not mean that you are being paranoid; you’re just being cautious. Being cautious with your personal information is always a wise idea. Here are four ways that you can make sure that your identity and your credit remains in your hands only.
1. Do not give out your Social Security number to anyone. You will have to give it to companies that you are attempting to obtain credit from, but if a company uses more than the last four digits of your Social Security number for identification, then ask them for another way to identity yourself.
2. If you were asked how to protect from identity theft online, you would probably say not to enter your credit card information. But, we all buy things online, so that is not realistic. The most important thing you can do on a computer to protect yourself is to always ensure that you fully log off of every site you have visited when you are done, and never have your browser save your password.
3. The easiest way to learn how to protect from identity theft is actually to go to the credit reporting agencies. They do not want to deal millions of people with problems on their records, so it is in their best interest to help you sort out your problem.
4. Deal with identity theft before it happens. Always monitor your credit, your banks statements, and shred your mail before throwing it away. This will prevent thieves from obtaining your vital personal information.
